Smart Tips on Beginner’s Guide To Hockey

Hockey

Hockey is one of the more physically demanding of sports, and it is well loved in many parts of the world, such as Canada, Russia, the United States, Norway, Sweden, and Scandinavia. Though the game has 22 players, it functions by rotating in 6 at any given time. These games are divided into three twenty minute periods, not counting overtime, which is also divided into twenty minute periods and lasts until a goal is scored. This applies if it’s a tied game at the last period and this is one way to break a tie to end a game as late ties are no longer allowed in the NHL.

Hockey traces its origins back to a much less strictly regulated game in Europe, where the referee was an audience member. The referee’s home these days is on the ice, where skates next to the players, and confers with the other referee (there are two) and the league officials, watching from the sidelines. The league behavior is also different because of the regulations, and the increased organization led to the addition of a penalty box. During the game, if a player is found to be breaking any moves that are not part of the league-accepted play, the player will be forced to sit out the rest of the period, and sometimes the rest of the game.

These are actually points that are added to the rival team’s score. While today’s numbers are lower, what we do see a lot of recently in the sport is an incredible amount of aggression between players. Not only do the rival team members fight each other, but so do fellow players, and the referee can wind up in the midst of a fight as well. This is because there are often brawls so bloody that they can deteriorate into fist fights or weapon assaults (if using a stick or a helmet). Many hockey players fight so intensely that they end up breaking the rink side protective glass.

Fighting on the ice that exists in present day hockey has been known to result in many injuries, cuts and bruises foremost amongst them. Something as simple as an unfair taunt from a rival player, or a call that a player didn’t agree with, could spark the fight. Sometimes, as a measure to bring down the intensity and anger of a fight, players are sent to the locker room to calm down. Because of the high-energy of hockey, anyone can get angry in a short amount of time. It’s important to know that while none of the players should be faulted for being quick to anger, bringing the referee into things is a different story.
